Chapter Eleven

Jason

Jason and Georgia were working to figure out what was going on with the Tannen family. They knew the family patriarch died, obviously. They just weren’t sure who would take his place. The person taking over would directly reflect on their end goal with Stacy. The leader had a brother, two sons, and a daughter. The brother, Chet, was old school. The eldest son was more interested in making millions than anything else. He wanted to have a legacy, and it didn’t matter to him if that meant following in his father’s footsteps or doing it on his own. The youngest son was an opportunist who would latch on to anyone or anything that would benefit him. His daughter was the toughest, physically and mentally. She always wanted to prove that she could hang out with the boys and do everything that they could do. She had no problem using her assets to get what she wanted.

There was no way to tell at this point, who was really in charge, but they all had a motive and they all would be a problem. Working on this day in and day out, was bad enough. But Stacy had also begun acting cold. He wasn't sure if it was because he was spending so much time with Georgia, or because she was out of her element. But it was really irritating.

Jason decided it was time to break the ice. While Georgia was following up with her contacts one night, Jason snagged a bottle of wine from her reserve and packed a light dinner to share with Stacy. He didn't give her any forewarning. He just showed up at the guest house, food in hand. Leave it to Georgia to have a picnic basket ready to go.

“What's all this for,” Stacey asked when he appeared.

“I think we could both use a break. I’ve been doing a lot of work and you've been stuck in here with not much to do. I feel bad. I think we should do something together. I figured maybe a picnic.”

“A night picnic? I didn’t think you had it in you.”

“You don't know much about me. We've been working closely together all this time. We should learn more about each other. What do you say? Georgia has a gazebo towards the back of the property that I think would be perfect.”

“A gazebo? Is she rich or something?”

“Being a federal agent doesn’t pay as much as you think. Fortunately, Georgia was very good at investing. She always had big plans. She liked to say that a house should be an oasis, and she made sure to make hers that way.”

“Oasis is a good word for it,” Stacy replied.

“Absolutely. If I was ever to settle in one place, I wouldn't be too sad about having a place like this.”

“You and me both,” Stacy said.

They walked through the property down to the gazebo. It was as beautiful as Jason remembered. It was ringed by flower gardens and overlooked the rest of Georgia’s well manicured property.
